[00:00.00]Welcome to New York (Commentary) - Taylor Swift
[00:00.12]Lyrics by:Taylor Swift/Becca Walls
[00:00.23]Composed by:Taylor Swift/Becca Walls
[00:00.33]Thanks for listening to Big Machine Radio
[00:02.34]As we celebrate the milestones of Taylor Swift
[00:05.39]You know she releases albums in the fall
[00:07.97]So right around October or November
[00:09.80]There is always so much to celebrate
[00:12.02]Her album 1989 came out October 27th, 2014
[00:17.33]Which means this is the fourth anniversary of that album
[00:21.44]And of course
[00:21.90]This is the album where Taylor Swift firmly planted her flag
[00:26.18]In the pop music world
[00:28.01]And she took everybody by storm
[00:30.48]The album sold 1,287 million copies in the US in its first week of release
[00:37.73]And we're gonna actually hear from Taylor about all the songs on the album
[00:41.26]As we take this little retrospective look at 1989
[00:45.75]And the first song on the album is Welcome to New York
[00:49.26]And Taylor explains why she chose to put this song first on the album
[00:53.89]The first song on 1989 is a song called Welcome to New York
[00:58.40]I wanted to start the album with this song
[01:00.24]Because New York has been an important landscape and location
[01:05.23]For the story of my life in the last couple of years
[01:08.38]I dreamed about moving to New York
[01:10.39]I obsessed over moving to New York and then I did it
[01:13.26]And the inspiration that I found in that city is kind of hard to describe
[01:19.06]And hard to compare to any other force of inspiration
[01:22.16]I've ever experienced in my life
[01:23.58]It's like an electric city
[01:25.41]And I approached moving there with such wide-eyed optimism
[01:30.69]And sort of saw it as a place of endless potential and possibilities
[01:34.97]And um you can kind of hear that reflected in this music
[01:38.42]And in this first song especially
[01:41.22]This is a song I did with Ryan Tedder called Welcome to New York
