lay it on thick
这是口语中才会用的表达，一般来说两层含义：
1. 夸大其词，言过其实；
If someone is laying it on thick or is laying it on, they are exaggerating a statement, experience, or emotion in order to try to impress people.
这个短语可以联想一个场景，人用刷子把东西表面刷上厚厚一层油漆，或者石膏的时候（本没有必要刷这么厚的）……
eg: I may have spoken a bit too freely, even laid it on a little.
我可能话说得随意了点，甚至有点夸大其词了。

eg: Bob, I think Mary understands the trouble she's in. There’s no need to lay it on so thick.
Bob，我觉得Mary应该知道她现在身处于什么样的麻烦里，没必要别再吓唬她了。

2. 溜须拍马，拼命奉承；给别人戴高帽；
to make something such as your admiration for someone or their achievements seem greater or more important than it really is in order to impress someone
eg: Don't lay it on too thick, but make sure they are flattered.
别狂拍马屁，但是要确保都把他们哄开心。

eg: Sally was laying it on thick when she said that Tom was the best singer she had ever heard.
Sally给Tom戴高帽，说Tom是她所听过的最棒的歌手。


其实今天讲到的这些表达，我们还可以有一些类似说法，可以一起积累

eg: He was really pouring it on. I don't think he's as poor as he says.

to express a feeling in a much stronger way than is necessary
用特别夸张的方式表达情绪
eg: My father really piled it on, shouting at me for ages about my exam results.
